(June 15 - 17th) Taste of Randolph

Written by Lori Barrett

This weekend is Taste of Randolph Street. If you have kids who are able to stay up late, there are some bands playing that the whole family might enjoy. Friday night’s lineup includes the Broken West, Stephen Kellogg and, at 8:30, Fountains of Wayne. All three acts are pop enough for music fans of all ages. We’re hoping to be able to catch Fountains of Wayne. I played a couple of songs and videos for my 9-year-old on the other day, and he liked them, though I wish we could have skipped the many upper-torso closeups in the “Stacy’s Mom” video.

Local band the Changes play early on Saturday, at 5:30. This would be the perfect musical accompaniment to an al fresco dinner. The Walkmen play at 7:00, and the Smoking Popes play at 8:30, for those with little sk8er boys or girls.

Sunday afternoon there’s a Baby Loves Disco set at 2:30, and a treat for moms and dads of a certain age, Marshall Crenshaw. His set is also pretty early, at
6:30.

Erin Flynn & Lenny Marsh: Cicada Singalong

We are big Erin Flynn fans and we listen to Dreamer of Dreams at least once a day, so we were very excited about the Cicada Singalong at the Notebaert Nature Museum. As it turns out, the event was even more wonderful than we expected. This time, I remembered my camera and battery. I wish I had a larger memory card, because I would have recorded more of the event.

For those of you who aren’t from the Chicago area, the 17 year Cicadas are up and about, even though you don’t really see any in the city. Interesting information from Wikipedia that mentions insects and prime numbers:

The Magicicada goes through a 17- or occasionally 13-year life cycle. These long life cycles are an adaptation to predators such as the cicada killer wasp and praying mantis, as a predator could not regularly fall into synchrony with the cicadas. Both 13 and 17 are prime numbers, so while a cicada with a 15-year life cycle could be preyed upon by a predator with a 3- or 5-year life cycle, the 13- and 17-year cycles allow them to stop the predators falling into step.

The event is hard to describe. I think it was more “interactive educational kids theater” than a singalong. Erin had the kids act out the life cycle of the Cicada while she described each stage of the Cicada’s life in song. What is amazing is that it completely worked. The kids loved it, the songs were amazing and everything just flowed. Erin just seemed to connect really well with the kids. She was never condescending and the kids really seemed to get what she was talking about. I wasn’t sure how much my 2 year old really absorbed, but then this morning when youtube finally finished processing my videos, she exclaimed, “I want the Timbales song”.

Justin Roberts

On Sunday, our girls woke up from their naps 30 minutes earlier than usual at 2:30. My husband and I looked at each other and said, “I bet we could get down to Printers Row for the Justin Roberts show at 3:00.” We ran around, piled in the car, parked illegally and made it to the show only 10 minutes late. We have Justin Roberts’ “Meltdown” CD and listen to it quite a lot, but we’ve never seen him live before. In all our rushing, I forgot my camera, so no video (again).

As expected, the show was a terrific amount of fun and Justin Roberts was even better live than on his CD. Lots of the kids knew his songs by heart and everyone danced and sang. He really seemed like a friend and you could tell the kids thought so too.

Chica-Go-Go

Written by Ann Torralba

I took my daughter to go see the World Premiere of the Chic-a-go-go movie.  We got to Schuba’s a little late.   I missed the red-carpet reception and Miss Mia completely.  We got there just in time to see the end of the dance party.  There was a jolly crowd of about 30 people eagerly awaiting the movie. One of the producers of the show, Jake Austen, commented that “85 percent of the people in the crowd were in the movie” The movie opened with a hilarious kids music video about nutrition done by the Goblins.  After the Goblins video, we got to see about 5 minutes of the movie before the sound went out.  Jake Austen tried desperately to fix it.  After about 20 minutes, my daughter and I left. Too bad because what I saw looked really good.

Tisa Batchelder at Millennium Park

Last Wednesday I packed my two girls into the car and drove down to Millennium Park for the free Wiggleworms. I was very proud that I was actually able to get us there a bit before 10:00 am. Unfortunately I left the battery for my camera in the charger in my kitchen, so I don’t have any video. At least I remembered both daughters.

I really wish I had my battery with me, because Tisa was fantastic. The music was terrific and she really engaged all the children and got everyone up and moving. The set up in the family tent is really nice with a big blue rubbery area in front of the stage for the kids to run, jump & fall down. The whole atmosphere was really friendly and inviting.

Afterwards Tisa signed our copy of “Tisa Plays Guitar and Strange Things Happen” for my daughters. We read the book quite often. I’ve been impressed at how well it has stood up to my girls’ rough treatment.

By the way, I stopped by a couple of days later during my lunch hour and the tent was closed because of high winds. It was quite windy, even for the windy city, so keep in mind that you might want to check on the weather before you make a long trip for a 10:00 am show.

(Saturday, June 9th) Erin Flynn at Cicada Singalong at Notebaert Nature Museum

This event looks strange and wonderful. Here’s the description from the Notebaert Nature Museum Website:

Join musician and educator Erin Flynn for songs and games all about the 17-year cicadas set to emerge in Chicago this summer. Children will build their own instrument to sing like cicadas and learn about the lives of these fascinating creatures. This program is free for children of all ages and their caregivers.

We’re huge fans of Erin Flynn’s cd and this sounds like a lot of fun.

Terrible Twos

Even though Schubas is on the same block as our house, my older daughter was exhausted and napped straight through the Terrible Twos show. Eventually I got tired of waiting around for her to wake up and I took my 1 year old with me to the show. I really like their cd and was looking forward to their show, but they were amazing live, even better than I expected. They say that they might be back performing again at Schubas in the Fall, so hopefully I’ll get to see the whole show then.

Gospel Fest

For Saturday evening we put in more effort and put together a proper picnic and drove downtown to Millennium Park for Gospel Fest at Pritzger Pavillion. This was our third year attending and I had forgotten just how amazing this event is. The music is terrific, the kids have a great time running around on the grass and the environment is spectacular.

Chalk Festival with Karen Banks-Lubicz

What a weekend! Summer festival season in Chicago has officially started. The weather guys predicted thunder storms all weekend, but for the most part the weather was terrific.

On Saturday morning our whole family took the ‘El’ down to Oz park for the Chalk Festival. We had a lazy picnic and picked up lunch at Subway. Both our girls had a fantastic time at the festival and the highlight was Karen Banks-Lubicz’s performance. She rocked. Here are my most recent experiments with video snapshots.

Kidzapalooza Lineup

We stopped by the Paul Frank store on the way to the Chalk Festival at Oz Park. Paul Green’s School of Rock was performing, but it was too loud for my little ones and I couldn’t work out how to get the ear plugs they gave us to stay in the girls’ ears. We did get a very cute balloon, a bag of shwag and I picked up up a card with the Kidzapalooza Lineup that says this:

August 3-5
Grant Park
11:00 am - 4:30 pm daily
Kidzapalooza
For Kidz at Lollapalooza

Kids 10 & under are free to Lollapalooza accompanied by a ticket holding adult.

Last friday my two girls and I took a trip to Fantasy Kingdom to play and see the Sharp Cookies. A loyal following of fans of Mr. Singer’s from Wiggleworms were there and everyone had a ton of fun. I’ve posted a couple of video snapshots from the show. It looks like Mr. Singer and Marius Mustard will be performing again at Fantasy Kingdom on Fri., July 27 at 11:30 a.m.

Toddlers, Tunes & Turtles at Chicago Park District

[Updated 5/24. I was able to get a bit more information from the Old Town School of Folk Music (thanks!) This list now also includes the very similar "Toddler Campfire Events."]

I’ve never been to Toddlers, Tunes & Turtles (or the Toddler Campfire) at the Chicago Park District, but it looks terrific. The Chicago Park District says:

They sing songs with musicians from Old Town School of Folk Music, meet live animals, have toddler-friendly nature activities and healthy refreshments. You’re welcome to bring along a picnic dinner. No registration required.

I found the following scheduled dates on the Park District Website, but it seems there should be more. Last year there were a lot more and they say that this year has an expanded schedule. I’ll keep an eye out for more dates.

More Free Summer Events at Millennium Park

It looks like all sorts of terrific stuff is going on at Millennium Park this summer. I just got a brochure in my newspaper this Sunday and it is overwhelming. You can see complete information at the Millennium Park website, although I would recommend getting the brochure since it is much easier to read.

I’m only going to include information about music events for kids on my event calendar. There are lots of other music events and lots of other activities for families and kids happening. As far as I can tell, you can go to Millennium Park anytime this summer and experience something wonderful. I happened to be there with my daughter on Friday and there was a terrific Gospel group performing. Some notable highlights:

  • Ralph’s World is performing Labor Day at the Pritzker Pavillion
  • Wiggleworms every day at 10 AM
  • Concerts most every day at 2:00 and 4:00 pm
  • Open rehearsals during the day at Pritzker Pavillion

Karen Banks-Lubicz at Supera Park (last Saturday)

I only found out about this concert at this last minute, so I didn’t have it on my schedule of events (sorry). It was our first outdoor concert of the year and my daughter thought it was amazing. Karen for Kids was terrific. We listen to their CD all the time and love their music. Also, Karen is great at getting the kids involved in the show. The weather was beautiful and the park was filled with ecstatic kids.

I tried to shoot some video, but didn’t do a great job. I used my little still digital camera and it almost immediately ran out of batteries. Hopefully I’ll do better next time. In the meanwhile, here’s a taste of the show.

(Saturday May 12th) Wee Hairy Beasties

The Wee Hairy Beasties don’t perform all that often. As far as I know, their only currently scheduled show is this Saturday at 3:00 and 3:30 pm at the Eye Spy Optical at 2130 N. Damen (773-252-8660). I’m not quite sure what to expect. Is it a large store? Do they have a big backyard? Are the wee ones getting paid in cool glasses?

Gooney Bird Kids

One of the best parts of starting this website is that I get to find out about all sorts of cool things that I probably wouldn’t have found on my own. Gooney Bird Kids is an amazing blog for information about music for kids. All I can say is, “Wow!” They will always have a place in my heart, since they mentioned this site.
